Job Summary

The Dental Assistant I will provide operational and administrative support to the Dentist and Dental Residents. She/he will assist the dentist in a variety of treatment procedures (including preparing the treatment room). He/she will take x-rays, collect and document the patient's medical history, as well as blood pressure and pulse. She/he will assist in the comfort of the patient before, during and after treatment. He/she will provide the patients with instructions for oral care following dental treatment. She/he will also assist the Dental Resident in the EMR with charting and documentation.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • The Dental Assistant performs duties associated with direct patient care including, but not limited to: Setting up equipment and instruments according to the procedure being performed; Taking diagnostic x-rays as indicated; Transferring instruments with skill and efficiency, Knowing and preparing materials necessary for the scheduled appointment; Greeting, seating and recording the patient's chief complaint. The dental assistant must also be knowledgeable concerning common medical conditions that may require medical consults, as well as obtaining blood pressure, pulse and performing blood glucose test on patients.
  • The dental assistant performs duties associated with safety and the environment of care including, but not limited to: Keeping operatory stocked at all times; Cleaning and disinfecting all contaminated surfaces in compliance with the MVHS Dental infection control policy.
  • The Dental Assistant will provide service excellence which includes but is not limited to: Maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor at all times; Working well on a team with the other members of the dental practice; Being sensitive to the needs of patients. Honest and ethical behavior is critical, including the ability to maintain proper confidentiality.
  • The Dental Assistant performs administrative duties including but not limited to: Interviewing patients and conducting intake; Scheduling appointments; creating and maintaining records; Taking inventory of supplies. The Dental Assistant must also have a basic understanding of dental medicine so as to understand the content of documents and forms, as well as familiarity with dental software such as Eagle soft.
  • The Dental Assistant will participate in continuing education which includes but is not limited to: Maintaining professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, in-services, and establishing professional networks; Maintaining awareness of MVHS policies and procedures relevant to the position.
