Application Counselor - Full Time - Days
Job Summary
The Application Counselor is responsible for identifying patients that do not have health insurance coverage and assisting them to apply for Medicaid, Medicaid Managed Care and/or New York State Exchange insurance plans.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Reviews self-pay reports daily for new self-pay patients and searches for any eligible insurance coverage.
- Contacts self-pay patient within appropriate time frame to offer assistance.
- Offers assistance in determine eligibility for Medicaid, Medicaid Managed Care, NYS health exchange plans or MVHS financial assistance.
- Accepts both internal and external referrals, acting as a community resource as needed.
- Obtains all necessary documents, insurance forms, assignments of benefits, etc. which are essential for the compensation of hospital services.
- Ensures patient demographic information is correct in the computer system, prior to billing.
- Responsible for timely follow up on all accounts, following established guidelines.
- Documents all pertinent information and actions taken in the hospital's computer system.
- Provides coverage for accounts specialists at other MVHS locations.
- Works closely with the MVHS Financial Representatives, Account Specialists, Case Management and Billing to assist the patient.
- Tracks and records accounts assisted and the outcome, including volume and dollar amount.
- Protects and upholds each patient’s privacy and confidentiality.
- Treats each patient with professionalism as well as makes every effort to maintain their sense of dignity
- Provides regular and ad hoc reports of all accounts worked and outcome.
- Communicates clearly and collaborates with the Hospital Supervisor, Nursing Staff, physicians and co-workers, even during periods of high patient census.
- Keeps supervisor informed of any issues or unusual situations.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Education/Experience Requirements
REQUIRED:
- High school diploma.
- Two years of experience in a Medical Office, Hospital or health insurance-related experience.
- Must have or be willing to become a New York State certified application counselor within 3 months of employment.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills required.
- Good attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently.
- Proficient with MS Office (Excel, Word, email) and able to learn new software rapidly.
- Ability to work flexible hours/various shifts to accommodate patient needs.
- Ability to drive/travel between MVHS locations during the workday.
PREFERRED:
- 6 months or more experience working with self-pay patients to apply for Medicaid or Insurance.
