Job Summary

The Designated Institutional Official (DIO) is a leadership role, supported by a .60 FTE administrative allocation that is responsible for providing oversight, direction and accountability for all aspects of Medial Education and the broader academic mission of Mohawk Valley Health System. This position ensures excellence in physician’s clinical training, while maintaining full compliance with applicable accrediting body requirements and advancing the organization’s academic and educational goals.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Oversees the Medical Education Department leaders, with direct management responsibility for the Program Directors, the Regional Medical Student Dean, the Lead Physician, Inpatient Teaching Service, the Director of Medical Education, and other assigned positions. Mentor leaders and support their professional development and performance.
  • Accountable for the successful implementation of organizational strategies.
  • Manages all related human resource matters related to performance, hiring, termination, and training.
  • Designs and implements the academic component of the medical education department, such as faculty development programs, institutional grand rounds, senior resident leadership series, and program director development, leadership and mentoring initiatives.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive medical education scholarly activity and research program, including the planning and hosting an annual GME Research Day, collaboration and innovation among medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty.
  • Oversees the clinical training, innovation, quality, and continuous improvement of medical student, residency and fellowship programs. Ensures all educational initiatives are deeply integrated with high quality, patient centered clinical practice, while ensuring full alignment with MVHS organizational objectives and applicable accrediting body requirements.
  • Oversees strategic and operational budgets, ensures fiscal compliance with organizational policies and department goals, and allocates financial, clinical and administrative resources to support medical student, resident and fellow education. 
  • Develops and recommends opportunities to the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer. Builds collaborative partnerships to advance and support medical education (e.g., medical schools, specialty clinics, research institutions, local governments, and communities).
  • Monitors and enforces compliance with accrediting body requirements, MVHS institutional policies and federal, state and local laws.
  • Optimize medical student, resident and fellowship training opportunities through strong partnerships with program directors, department chairs, senior leaders, affiliated medical schools and participating sites.
  • Serves as the primary institutional leader for all accredited residency and fellowship programs, as the Designated Institutional Official and is accountable for fulfilling all ACGME requirements of the role.
  • Chair and serves as a voting member of the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC)
  • Ensures that the GMEC fulfills its oversight and review/approval responsibilities
  • Establish the level of staffing needed to support the GME administration
  • Ensures approval of program letters of agreement (PLA) that govern relationships between each accredited program and each participating site providing a required assignments for residents/fellows in the program
  • Oversees submissions of request to the ACGME, including the Annual Update and each ACGME accredited and recognized program(s)
  • Oversees the submission of applications for ACGME accreditation and recognition, requests for voluntary withdrawal of accreditation and recognition, and requests for changes in residency and fellowship program complements.
  • Annually, submits a written executive summary of the Annual Institutional Review to the Sponsoring Institution’s Governing Body.

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Medical Doctorate (MD) or Doctorate of Osteopathy (DO) degree.
  • Current certification in a specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties or American Osteopathic Association.
  • Three years of graduate medical education administrative experience including at least one year experience as a Program Director.
  • Unrestricted medical licensure in the state of New York.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in managing physicians and program administration
  • Knowledge of continuously evolving standards, requirements, and trends of medical education and research.
  • Demonstrated excellence in an overall mix of skills including clinical care, evaluation methodology, teaching, mentoring and scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine and institutional service.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage highly emotional situations with self-awareness and empathy
  • Proven interpersonal skills with a respectful approach to communication, conflict resolution, professionalism and collaboration while honoring diverse perspectives and personal limits. 

Licensure/Certification Requirements

PREFERRED

  • Masters or doctoral degree in health administration or education
  • Experience as a Designated Institutional Official
  • Three years’ experience as a Program Director
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in leading and managing physicians within a medical education setting, including oversight of faculty, program directors, or clinical educators in graduate or undergraduate medical training
