Key Responsibilities:
• Performs assigned technical duties such as logging in specimens, changing solutions, instrumentation checks, accurate labeling, filing, changing of reagents/solutions and proper storing and disposing of specimens.
• Participates in frozen sectioning by orienting tissue specimens in a manner to produce a full section for quick freezing, staining and microscopic viewing. Performs specialized procedures such as decalcification, photographing, inking and special specimen sampling requests.
• Assists with preparing slides/specimens/blocks for send outs that are requested by the pathologist for consultation or request from an outside facility for review.
• Ensures specimen collection and labeling is complete and accurate.
• Identifies any unusual patient data /results and escalates to the appropriate individual.
• Performs quality control processes and maintains laboratory equipment, instruments, reagents and/or supplies and required documentation.
• Participates in continuous learning opportunities such as seminars, trainings, workshops. Maintains awareness of MVHS policies and procedures relevant to the position and any changes that may occur.
• Provides patient care in a safe, effective and efficient manner, following all organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
• Uses professional and courteous customer service in all interactions with co-workers, providers, patients. Remains calm in stressful situations.
• Adheres to Infection Control program to prevent spread of infections, practice of standard precautions, protects self, peers, patients, and visitors from infection and uses appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Performs other duties as required.
What We're Looking For:
Education: Post-high school course in histotechnology or a two-year degree in a related biological science.
Experience: Six to twelve months of experience in histotechnology preferred, but we welcome eager learners ready to grow.
Certification: NYS Histological Technician Certification, NYS Histotechnologist Certification, or NYS Clinical Laboratory Technician Certification required.
