Inpatient Supervisor - Laboratory - Full Time - Evenings

Job Summary

The Supervisor Inpatient Laboratory is responsible for the daily operations and management of client services, inpatient phlebotomy, and specimen receiving/processing. Provides oversight of Specimen Processing, Lab Assistant I and II staff.  Responsible for the activities, training of all staff, and all daily operations of the Specimen Processors and Lab Assistants. Works to ensure efficient and accurate workflow of the office and phlebotomy. Ensures all applicable policies and procedures are current and being followed by staff.  Demonstrates a commitment to quality service.  Works under the direction of the Laboratory Non-Technical Manager.  

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct the work of non-technical staff to achieve optimum patient flow and cycle times appropriate for services.  Provide oversight, direction and work assignments. 
  • Prepare staffing schedules and work assignments for inpatient specimen processing and phlebotomy staff.  Handle time off requests and call-outs.
  • Serve as a resource and role model to the technical laboratory staff in problem-solving activities related to specimen collection, processing, reporting and courier activities in collaboration with the Laboratory Services Outpatient Supervisor.
  • Work collaboratively with Clinical Laboratory Educator to develop and implement orientation programs for new staff and coordinate continuing education to ensure quality staff development. Instruct and train employees in laboratory processes and tools.
  • Ensure competency assessments for phlebotomy and processing are completed initially, 6 months for new staff/procedures, and then annually.
  • Coach, counsel, motivate and evaluate assigned staff.  Promote effective teamwork throughout the department.
  • Implement and maintain the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) for client services, specimen processing and phlebotomy services in accordance with regulation guidelines and distributes information to staff as needed.
  • Research, evaluate, recommend, and implement or revise processes, services or techniques to improve workflow or operations.
  • Coordinate maintenance and calibration of clinical equipment per agency protocol and upkeep of required records and logs; maintain medical equipment and assure regular services are performed as needed. 
  • Respond and assist in the resolution of client and patient issues or concerns in a timely fashion.
  • Follow up on urgent concerns from office staff and phlebotomist in a timely manner. 
  • Keep laboratory leadership informed of issues, concerns and problems.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with established safety and OSHA guidelines
  • Conduct field audits in collaboration with Quality Manager for compliance.
  • Manage ordering inventory of collection and processing supplies, and purchase requisitions.
  • Work with Laboratory Administration on the collection of QA data and the identification of opportunities for improvement including but not limited to monitoring staff productivity.
  • Provide excellent customer service, assuring that customer service standards are consistently met or exceeded; conduct on-going patient and provider satisfaction surveys to measure and report performance providing results to staff and management; identifying opportunities to improve service and take corrective actions accordingly; maintaining data and providing reports.
  • Attend and actively participate in assigned meetings.
  • Provide input to or make recommendations on employee hires, transfers, disciplinary actions, terminations and similar actions in collaboration with HR and Laboratory management. Resolve grievances and other staff problems in a fair, timely and consistent manner also in conjunction with HR and Laboratory management.  Collaborate with Laboratory management on the completion and delivery of staff performance appraisals.
  • Ensure quality program management through compliance with federal state and local regulations concerning healthcare; identification of opportunities to improve quality of care; and assessment and improvement of key processes that directly impact patient care.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
     

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:    

  • Associates degree in a related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 2 years in a clinical laboratory setting to include experience with data entry, specimen processing, phlebotomy procedures, techniques and skills.  
  • Ability to lead, guide and motivate others. 
  • Strong organizational, time management and prioritization skills.
