Job Summary
Under the direction of the Laboratory Medical Director, Director of Laboratory Services and Core Lab Technical Supervisor. Performs clinical testing in the Core Laboratory sections of Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, and Special Chemistry. Assists the Core Lab Technical Supervisor in all areas including, but not limited to, competency assessments, training, maintaining stock levels, policy and procedure changes and communication to staff, proficiency testing, and maintaining compliance to regulatory standards. Understands method principles, performs QC procedures, interprets results as to accuracy, acceptability and critical limits.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Prepares samples for analysis accurately and efficiently.
- Evaluates suitability of specimens for analysis: appropriately accepting or rejecting specimens according to laboratory policy.
- Store and/or transport samples using appropriate methods.
- Following standardized procedures, perform testing in the Core Laboratory sections of Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Urinalysis, and Special Chemistry, Blood Bank and limited Microbiology.
- Evaluates laboratory results through correlation with common physiological conditions. Reports test results accurately and timely per laboratory protocols.
- Anticipate and recognize error, responding in an appropriate manner and by reporting to appropriate supervisor or manager.
- Determines the priority of requests, arranging workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency. Utilizes efficient organization and workflow. Turnaround times are within established timeframes.
- Keeps supervisors and managers informed of activities including unusual patient data and results.
- Maintain any clinical laboratory instrumentation and/or equipment as assigned: all preventative maintenance is documented as required.
- Recognizes and corrects basic instrument malfunctions within skill level. May refer serious instrument problems to supervisor. Contacts Service when required.
- Conducts established quality control procedures on analytical tests, procedures, equipment, reagents, media, and products, and maintains accurate documentation per department protocols.
- Maintains adequate stock of the lab, notifying Technical Supervisors when levels need replenishing with enough lead time to avoid overnight or additional shipping charges.
Education/Experience Requirements
Required:
- Baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology or related science with approved clinical training.
- minimum 1 year experience in laboratory work (may be part of clinical training program).
Licensure/Certification Requirements
Required:
- New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License.
