Laboratory Assistant II - Full Time - Days

Job Summary

THe Laboratory Assistant II receives patients, correctly identifies patients, collects specimens from patients, transports specimens, processes specimens, performs clerical functions, and assists technical personnel with assigned non-technical tasks. Processes and packages specimens being referred to a reference laboratory for testing. Works under the direction of the Director of Laboratory Services, Laboratory Manager, and Lab Supervisor.    

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinates specimen preparation and packaging for reference lab testing. Monitors all outstanding reference lab orders. Scans reference lab reports into the computer system as they are received and retrieves scanned documents.
  • May assist the Supervisor with maintaining competency records and documentation and performs competency assessments.
  • Obtains blood specimens by skin puncture (capillary) or venipuncture using appropriate technique and maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test performed:
    •  from neonates by capillary blood collection techniques; 
    • from pediatric,
    • adolescents, 
    • adult and geriatric patients.
  • Register and order tests on patients as needed following all current procedures completely including, but not limited to, ensuring scripts are scanned into computer system daily. 
  • Instructs patients in collection of urine, sputum, stool specimens.  Accepts these specimens from patients.
  • Follows Chain of Custody specimen collection protocols.
  • Follows correct patient identification procedures.
  • Ensures specimen collection and labeling is complete and accurate. 
  • Provides patient care in a safe, effective and efficient manner, following all organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Keeps carts and phlebotomy areas adequately stocked and neat and orderly.  Disinfects at the end of each shift. 
  • Arranges workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency in areas of phlebotomy and processing as assigned.
  • When assigned, acts as a responsible driver and adheres to all traffic laws.  As assigned, assists the Supervisor with training, coaching and honing the skills of the Lab Assistants
  • Uses professional and courteous customer service in all interactions with co-workers, providers, patients.  Remains calm in stressful situations.
  • Adheres to Infection Control program to prevent spread of infections, practice of standard precautions, protects self, peers, patients, and visitors from infection and uses appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Perform other duties as required.
     

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma
  • 1 year of Phlebotomy or laboratory experience.
