Job Summary

Assists in nursing care and preparation of surgical patient by performance of routine and delegated duties according to standards and policies of the hospital and department. Performs scrub duties and related procedures. Performs housekeeping duties as necessary and assists in maintenance of all supplies. Provides assistance in emergency procedures as well as elective and scheduled cases. Assists in preparation, transportation and supervision of patients. Maintains education in surgical, operating room and related aspects of nursing care. Work is performed under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, in accordance with established hospital standards, nursing department/unit structure, process and outcome standards, established regulatory and accreditation requirements and the philosophy, goals and objectives of the hospital and nursing department.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Identifies patient and surgical procedure according to unit standards.
  • Provides a thorough explanation of procedures to client as indicated.
  • Assists in the proper draping, positioning and prepping of surgical patient in accordance of unit standards as observed by Charge Nurse/RN under direction of physician.
  • Performs services requiring technical or manual skills under the direction of Circulating RN.
  • Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for each individual surgical procedure.
  • Follows aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures.
  • Checks all equipment/instruments needed prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning and availability.
  • Completes operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles). Follows proper procedure in the event of incorrect count; reports all discrepancies to Circulating Nurse and surgeon.
  • Cleans, assembles, and maintains specialty instruments and equipment according to unit standards.
  • Knows and observes the hospital and nursing department safety, fire and disaster policies and procedures.
  • Participates actively in unit and department staff development activities by acting as a resource for new employees at least once a year.
  • Documents appropriate information by use of charting system and completion of QA memos or problem ID forms.

Special Equipment, Skills or Other Requirements:

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
  • Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department

Education/Experience Requirements

Required: High school diploma or equivalent

Required: Minimum 1 year of work experience in the Operating Room or related field

Licensure/Certification Requirements

Required: Current BCLS certification
Preferred: Completion of a nationally Surgical Technician certified education program and current certification, or LPN, or grandfathered in through NYS (S5185A)
