Pastoral Care Chaplain - Part Time - Days

Job Summary

The Pastoral Care Chaplain supports the Spiritual Care and Mission function for Mohawk Valley Health System by providing spiritual care to patients/residents, their loved ones, and to staff as appropriate. Acts as liaison and communicates with the religious community in the area. 

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Delivers spiritual care to patients/residents, their loved ones, employees and volunteers.
  • Responds to requests for pastoral care in a timely manner.
  • Participates in the offering of worship opportunities. 
  • Participates in the meeting of ritual and sacramental needs.
  • Offers grief and bereavement services including rituals such as memorial services. 
  • May contact outside clergy or spiritual counselors to assist in spiritual care of patients and family members upon request.
  • Complies with MVHS policies and procedures that affect visiting with patients and their families.
  • Supports and participates in continuous learning about spiritual care issues and activities.
  • May serve as a liaison to other departments such as social work, volunteers, etc. 
  • Supports an interdisciplinary approach to spiritual care.
  • Maintains spiritual care and worship spaces. 
  • Keeps records of pastoral activity to communicate with other members of the department and report to the health care system per policy and, when appropriate, religious authorities. 
  • Supports the department’s plan for quality improvement. 
  • May contribute to the MVHS community through presentations, teaching, and publication. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 
     

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university. 
  • Ordained as a minister as evidenced by ecclesiastical endorsement in a particular faith such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism or other faith. 
  • Ability to address the needs of those with complex spiritual issues related to end of life, chronic disease stress, traumatic injury and illness, and general issues associated with life circumstances.
  • Basic computer skills.  
     

PREFERRED:

  • Master of Divinity Degree from an accredited theological school preferred.
  • Certification with a national health care chaplaincy body such as ACPE, AJC, or NACC preferred. 
  • Experience with various religions.
