Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Laboratory Services, Laboratory Manager, and Laboratory Supervisor.  Receives patients, correctly identifies patients, collects specimens from patients, transports specimens, performs clerical functions, and assists technical personnel with assigned non-technical tasks.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Obtains blood specimens by skin puncture (capillary) or venipuncture using appropriate technique and maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test performed according to laboratory policy and procedure.
  • Instructs patients in collection of urine, sputum, stool specimens. Accepts these specimens from patients and verifies labeling is complete and accurate.
  • Follows correct patient identification procedures. (SPP069, LAI803, LAI805, LAI806) - verbally asks patient to state name & date of birth and verifies information given against scripts, labels, and wrist bands.
  • Greets patients, introduces self, and explains specific procedures. Parent, guardian or caretaker accompanying patient are also greeted and procedures also explained to them.
  • Specimen labeling is complete and accurate. Correct specimens and tests are drawn and collected. Tubes are filled to correct levels.
  • Carts and phlebotomy areas are adequately stocked and kept neat and orderly. Carts are disinfected at the end of each shift. Cleaning and restocking is documented, following LAI275.
  • Performs clerical/receptionist functions: result reporting, fax machine, filing, specimen processing.
  • As assigned, prepares specimens for testing according to procedure. Distributes samples to appropriate areas and brings emergency and time requests to the immediate attention of appropriate personnel.
  • Utilizes computer to register patients, order tests, and print barcodes. Information is complete and accurate.

Education/Experience Requirements

Required: 

  • High School graduate 

Licensure/Certification Requirements

Required:

  • Phlebotomy work experience or phlebotomy course
  • Valid driver's license
