Point of Care Assistant - Full Time - Days

Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Laboratory Medical Director, Director of Laboratory Services, and Laboratory Point of Care Coordinator, the Point of Care Testing Assistant works as an assistant to the Point of Care Coordinator overseeing the testing performed on nursing units and its satellite sites.  The Point of Care Testing Assistant assists the Point of Care Coordinator in design, development and implementation of all policies and procedures surrounding the testing activities within an institution.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCY:  Obtains blood specimens by skin puncture or venipuncture using appropriate technique and maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test performed.

  • Evaluate competency of staff to perform lab procedures at off-sites and on nursing units initially, 6 months for new employees and new procedures, and annually.  Documentation is complete.  Report results to employees’ supervisors.
  • Tracks Emergency Department POCT Competency – initial training, 6 month and annual.
  • Train personnel for all POCT sites within the facility and its satellite sites.
  • Assists with validation procedures, including organizing data collected and trains staff to perform new procedures, 
  • Assists in developing written protocols (SOPs) for all POCT sites within the facility and its satellite sites.  
  • Maintains instrumentation for point of care testing:  calibrations, linearities, validations, troubleshooting as necessary. Forwards documentation to Point of Care Coordinator for review and approval before testing is utilized.
  • Enters new and removes all termed operators ID in POC test systems.
  • Evaluate and assist with setting up new sites as they are added to the Medical Center.  
  • Makes routine rounds to satellite sites to review temperature data and verifies that corrective action was taken. Also checks stock at the sites to ensure the stock is not outdated.
  • Keep current on NYSDOH, OSHA, DNV standards related to point of care testing. As directed by the Point of Care Coordinator, routinely audits all testing policies and procedures to ensure that the facility is in compliance with all regulations imposed by the government and accrediting agencies.
  • Assists with ordering proficiency testing subscriptions for all POCT to ensure regulatory requirements are being met.
  • Review proficiency testing schedules, ensures testing is being performed and rotated between testers.  Reviews scores, distributes scores to testing areas, and assists with corrective actions when required.
  • Assist in keeping laboratory point of care procedure manuals current.
  • Act as a liaison between nursing, medical staff, and lab related to point of care testing needs.
  • Act as a liaison between the laboratory and medical group.
  • Maintains adequate supply inventory.  Orders supplies as needed.  
  • Assists with ordering, validating and installing all instrumentation for all POCT areas.
  • Perform software updates on POCT instrumentation.
  • Appropriately responds to recalls and alerts for POCT instrumentation and/or instrument, following the Medical Center’s Procedure.
  • Contributes to Medical Center committees where appropriate to job performance and expectations.
  • Plan and conduct in-service education for point of care testing personnel.
  • Assists nursing and/or respiratory therapists with performing the monthly QC on the i-STAT instruments for ACT, PT/INR testing, and Rapid Response Testing including Troponin I as needed.
     

Education/Experience Requirements

Required:
  • Associate degree in Biology, Chemistry or other related science.
Preferred: 
  • Bachelor degree in Biology, Chemistry or other related science.
  • Clinical Laboratory experience 

Licensure/Certification Requirements

Required:
  • Valid Driver’s License.
