Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Respiratory Care Services Medical Director and Clinical Coordinator, the Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing respiratory care services in accordance with specific physician’s orders, department policies and procedures.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Regularly completes physician prescribed respiratory care modalities while demonstrating a conscientious approach in their administration to the patient
  • Identifies patient and checks ID wristband per hospital policy
  • Verifies correct and appropriate orders and takes action to clarify any discrepancies
  • Gathers appropriate information for a basis for evaluation, recommendations and treatments
  • Documents all relative information of patient assessments/treatments/education
  • Assures respiratory equipment is set up correctly and operating properly
  • Updates computer worksheet to reflect current orders
  • Maintains open lines of communication with supervisor and co-workers insuring proper effective sharing of information
  • Receives report from lead tech/gives report to oncoming lead tech sharing pertinent information
  • Assures any used equipment is processed, properly assembled and checked out for patient use during the shift, assures proper levels of supplies for efficient functioning of the shift
  • Reviews and signs departmental communications/postings
  • Provides complete written/oral report with appropriate clinical information.
  • Attends at least 75% staff meetings annually, reads all monthly staff meeting minutes
  • Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities

Education Requirements

Required: Graduate of an AMA approved school of respiratory care and/or certified or registered by the NBRC

Licensure/Certification Requirements

Required: Current NYS respiratory therapist or technician license; BLS/CPR certification
