Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Laboratory Services, Operations Coordinator and Laboratory Manager. Registers and orders patient tests in computer system(s). Picks-up and/or processes specimens for laboratory testing and routes them to the appropriate department. Performs receptionist duties, maintains records and files, prints, faxes and mails patient reports. Has excellent communication skills. Follows written procedures and has good critical thinking skills.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Acts as laboratory receptionist: greets patients and visitors, answers telephone, places calls, relays messages, gives pre-test information to patients: neonatal & pediatric patients and caretakers, adolescent patients, adults, geriatric patients, and visitors.
- Maintains printers in lab, ensuring they are cleaned, stocked with paper and ink and notifies service, if necessary.
- Utilizes proper phone technique while answering phone
- Has knowledge of the computer scheduling program to be able to generate a schedule of home draws for any given day
- Register specimens brought to the laboratory as required in current registration system.
- Registers nursing home and other patients as required.
- Obtains follow up information on any and all missing insurance and/or demographic information.
- Verifies all applicable insurances through appropriate verification system.
- Maintains records and files in designated areas throughout the lab.
- Scans scripts/requisitions/orders during every registration.
- Scans reference lab reports into the computer system as they are received
- Checks for Medicare covered diagnosis utilizing current software.
- Process specimens received through the LIS: Enters collection date and time, requisition number and/or other information and other required information for specimens, and routes specimens to appropriate areas.
- Prepares samples for testing to include centrifugation, checking specimens for appropriate testing levels.
- Monitors call lists, completes calls, and gives results to appropriate personnel.
- Dispatches phlebotomists as needed to meet expected turnaround times, following work instructions LAI271.
- Acts as courier to pick-up specimens from lab clients.
