Sr Director, Nursing Education, Quality and Prof Governance - Full Time - Days

Job Summary

The Senior Director of Nursing Education, Quality, and Professional Governance provides strategic and operational leadership for nursing education, clinical excellence, and professional practice for all inpatient and outpatient nursing across the Mohawk Valley Health System. Ensures that nursing practice is evidence-based, outcomes-driven, and aligned with MVHS goals and regulatory standards. The Senior Director fosters a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and shared decision-making that advances the quality, safety, and professional development of the nursing workforce and delivers a high quality patient experience. This role is accountable for developing, leading, and executing large scale operational projects as well as supporting day to day organizational performance throughout the system. 

Core Job Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

  • Provides leadership in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing education, quality, and professional governance initiatives. 
  • Partners with the Chief Nursing Officer and other leaders to align nursing priorities with the mission, values, and strategic plan.
  • Serves as a key resource for nursing leadership on matters related to professional practice standards, competency development, and performance improvement.

Nursing Education

  • Oversees system-wide clinical education programs including orientation, competency assessment, continuing education, leadership development and student programs.
  • Responsible for the availability of appropriately trained staff who will deliver a high quality, consistent standard of nursing care. Leads efforts to assess clinical educational needs and implement innovative learning solutions, tools and resources. 
  • Ensures compliance with accreditation and licensure requirements for staff education and training.
  • Cultivates a culture that promotes professional growth, continuous learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, constructive communication, flexibility, teamwork, accountability and customer service excellence.
  • Keeps current in emerging trends in nursing and clinical education.

Nursing Quality & Practice Excellence

  • Directs integrated initiatives to drive improvements in nursing quality indicators, safety, optimal patient outcomes, patient satisfaction and cost effectiveness.   
  • Collaborates with nursing teams to identify and disseminate evidence-based best practices. 
  • Collaborates with the Chief Quality Officer on system wide quality initiatives.
  • Utilizes data analytics and benchmarking to monitor performance metrics and drive continuous improvement in nursing care delivery.
  • Leads and participates in ongoing regulatory and accreditation readiness across clinical areas.  
  • Manages financials for areas of responsibility.

Professional Governance & Engagement

  • Leads the development of a robust professional governance structure that empowers nurses to participate in decision-making related to practice and quality.
  • Promotes nursing professionalism, accountability and engagement through shared governance councils and recognition programs.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Builds effective partnerships with nursing, medical, and operational leaders to promote a culture of excellence.
  • With the Leadership and Human Resources input, makes decisions related to performance management, hiring, transfers, corrective actions, terminations, etc. Resolves staff issues and grievances in a fair, timely and consistent manner also in partnership with HR. 
  • Maintains a focus on internal talent management and retention.
  • Responsible for departmental budgets, capital expenditures and grants and awards. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
     

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • MSN or Master’s degree in a related field.  
  • 8 years of nursing experience including 5 years of progressive management.  
  • Expertise in evidence-based practice, quality improvement, nursing education, and emerging technologies.
  • Knowledge of regulations, standards and guidelines of regulatory/accrediting bodies as well as hospital and department standards, policies and procedures.
  • Strategic and systems-level thinking skills.
  • Exceptional communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to lead change and inspire professional growth.
     

PREFERRED:

  • Experience with Magnet hospitals.
     

Licensure/Certification Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Current RN license in New York.

PREFERRED:

  • National Board Certification as a Nurse Executive (e.g. NEA-BC or CENP).
  • Healthcare Quality certification (CPHQ, HCQM, etc.).
