Supervisor Histology/Cytology - Full Time - Days
Job Summary
The Supervisor Histology is a working supervisor who oversees the day to day activities related to the Histology department, ensuring the consistent delivery of high-value laboratory care to all patient populations. Performs and demonstrates proficiency and understanding of technical procedures of processing, embedding, cutting and staining tissue specimens. Responsible for validity of test results, specimen handling and material filing, and the maintenance of laboratory records and equipment maintenance. Establishes work priorities, and assists staff in resolving operational issues/problems.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Assigns and performs technical duties such as logging in specimens, changing solutions, instrumentation checks, accurate labeling, filing, changing of reagents/solutions and proper storing and disposing of specimens. Monitors work for quality, completeness and customer service. Ensures work assignments will allow for optimal patient care and efficiency.
- Completes and approves employee schedules in a timely and efficient manner. Handles vacation requests and callouts.
- Assists with preparing slides/specimens/blocks for send outs as requested by the pathologist or those received from an outside facility for review.
- Identifies any unusual patient data and/results and brings to the appropriate Manager’s attention.
- Provides supportive bench work, including embedding, microtomy, staining and slide distributions, technical consultation, identifies unusual results, and supports the smooth, efficient and safe operations in histology lab area.
- Ensures that departmental procedures, operations and records meet the requirements of the NYSDOH, and DNV accreditation agencies. Proactively shares updates to procedures, policies and regulations with staff.
- Ensures that all department documentation is completed including but not limited to accurate logs, statistics and files. Ensures instrumentation performance checks are performed on time and takes action on equipment needing repair or replacement.
- Collaborates with others to coordinate services, streamline and standardize work flows and procedures, and/or drive positive outcomes.
- Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and materials by timely ordering of supplies.
- Ensures that departmental environment is organized, clean and safe and that all waste is disposed of per policy.
- Serves as a resource and role model for staff in the Histology area.
- Participates in and delivers learning opportunities such as seminars, trainings, workshops.
- Responsible for orienting and training new hires. Ensures all staff have the necessary resources, tools and training to fulfill their duties.
- In partnership with the Manager and Human Resources, provides input to or makes recommendations on employee hires, performance reviews, transfers, promotions, salary changes, disciplinary actions, terminations and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other staff problems in a fair, timely and consistent manner also in partnership with HR.
- Keeps department leadership updated on issues, problems and progress towards goals.
- Promotes effective teamwork and communication throughout the department.
- Performs related duties as directed.
Education/Experience Requirements
REQUIRED:
- Associate’s degree in histotechnology, biology or chemistry.
- Two years of experience as a histotechnician.
- Flexibility to work week weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule to assist with autopsies.
PREFERRED:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or a Laboratory Science.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
REQUIRED:
- NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License or NYS Certified Technician or NYS Histotechnologist License.
