Job Summary

Under the direction/supervision of a licensed nurse, assists other healthcare members in all or a portion of selected duties as outlined in this job description.  Assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment. May be required to transport medications as defined and authorized by Pharmacy Services.

Core Job Responsibilities

The Unit Service Aide performs basic routine resident duties to assigned residents according to standards consistent with the Resident’s Bill of Rights.

Assists other healthcare providers in positioning, turning and transferring.

Ambulates residents on the nursing unit as directed.

Regularly prepares residents for meals, sets up resident and serves food.  Assists with positioning resident to avoid choking and facilitate eating.  Distributes water and other nourishments under the direct supervision of the licensed nurse.

Assists resident with handling and care of clothing and other personal property.

Prepares rooms for admission, discharges and transfers.

Assists with transporting residents to and from various departments.

Transports specimens.

Demonstrates appropriate use of equipment used on the unit, specific to the role of the Unit Service Aide (i.e. wheelchair, stretcher, bedside table, bed, call light, side rails, ice machine, resident’s television).

Complies with Infection Control, OSHA and Fire Safety.

Makes beds in accordance with standard.

Performs recreational activity as assigned.

Accompanies resident to scheduled appointments.

Effectively uses communication skills in working with residents.

All other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, attendance record and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with healthcare environment. Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
