POSITION SUMMARY:     The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is an integral part of the nursing team, performing routine and delegated duties, according to standards and policies of the Hospital and Nursing Department   Work is performed under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) in accordance with established regulatory and accreditation requirements.
The practice of nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse is defined in Section 6902
of Article 139 of the Education Law as performing tasks and responsibilities within the framework of casefinding, health teaching, health counseling, and provision of suppartive and restorative care under the direction of an RN or licensed physician,. dentist or other licensed health care provider legally authorized and in accordance  with the commissioner's regulations.Under the direction of a RN,the LPN may provide nursing  treatments, gather patient measurements, signs and symptoms that can be used by the RN in making decisions about the nursing
care of patients. An LPN may not interpret or evaluate clinical data nor function independent of direction by an RN.


EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE:

-New York State Licensed Practical Nurse Registration.
-BLS certification

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS, OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

-Effective communication skills, both written and verbal

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:     OSHA Exposure Category A


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:     Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, push and pull.  Walking and standing most of shift.


WORK CONTACT GROUP:     Patients, families, visitors, clergy, all members  of the health care team, all hospital departments.


SUPERVISED BY:     RN Staff Nurse or RN Charge Nurse
